Training Course Announcement North County Dublin & Co Louth 17th January 2013

How to provide effective Activity Therapy for Alzheimer’s & Dementia clients in an enjoyable but cost effective programme.

North Dublin Nursing Home Staff Training Activity Therapy

This is a staff training course for professionals in residential home elder care. The course teaches staff how to provide activity therapy for patients with Alzheimer’s and Dementia based on the proven ImaginationGYM methodology. Providing activity therapy can be quite a difficult task for many staff and the course will not only teach staff how to deliver effective activity therapy but will also provide evidence and case studies on our research in this area.

The course is being held in North County Dublin 17th January 2013
This is a very cost effective way of delivering an activity program in your Nursing Home on a regular basis. After initial training and set up costs, annaualised costs per capita for each workshop can be measured in cents. We recommend the program is run at least once a week for clients as it has a progressively beneficial impact. Key outcomes included:

  • Reduction of stress
  • Increased engagement
  • Improved communication
  • Helpful behaviour management
  • A very enjoyable experience for both clients & staff
  • Stimulation of all senses
  • Group work
  • Cumulative positive affects over time.

The program is successful because the workshops are run to a fixed methodology. The initial training is necessary to impart this methodology to staff. Training is held on 2 separate days approximately 1 to 2 months apart. Ongoing support is also available as part of the initial training commitment.

Activity Therapy for Older People

Eldery man with grand daughter

Over the last 6 months we have been researching  and    modifying the ImaginationGYM methodology at a very progressive care home in Wexford, Ireland. The modifications were designed so that the methodology can be used in the wider context of ‘Activity Therapy’ for older people as practised in most care facilities around the world.

Apart from modifying some of the material used in the methodology, research was carried out to see if the methodology will work with residents who have Alzheimer’s. This part of the trial had a simple goal, to see if the methodology stimulated any reaction in these residents and if this would be sustainable and grow over regular exposure to the ImaginationGYM methods. An independent report is due to be released by the institution shortly and we will be happy to provide a copy to you if you contact us through the website, Facebook or twitter. But in general the project was very successful because it helped us modify the methodology as desired but more important it achieved the goals of engaging the residents, increasing interactions and sustaining positive changes over time. This occurred even with residents who had been non responsive to other therapies in the past.

The facility has now decided to extend the project to cover a wider spectrum of remedies to include those who would benefit from art stimulation, relaxation techniques and to help those with sleeping problems. They have also decided to officially implement the ImaginationGYM methodology as part of their ‘Activity Therapy for Older People’.  Staff training in the methodology has already begun (in Ireland the training has been approved and is now part funded by an Irish government training body, FAS).
